The axial skeleton is the central portion of the bony skeleton comprising the head, neck and trunk (80 bones in total). It has many functions including housing and protecting the central nervous system as well as the organs of the chest, abdomen

The axial skeleton forms the vertical, central axis of the body and includes all bones of the head, neck, chest, and back (Figure 7.1.1). It serves to protect the brain, spinal cord, heart, and lungs. INTRODUCTION  The Skeletal System consists of the axial skeleton and the appendicular skeleton.  The Axial skeleton comprises the skull, the auditory ossicles and hyoid bone, the vertebral column, and the thoracic cage.  The Appendicular skeleton comprises the upper and lower limbs, the pectoral and pelvic girdles.

The axial skeleton of the adult consists of 80 bones, including the skull, the vertebral column, and the thoracic cage. The skull is formed by 22 bones. Also associated with the head are an additional seven bones, including the hyoid bone and the ear ossicles (three small bones found in each middle ear).

In the human, the axial skeleton consists of the 80 bones while the appendicular skel­eton consists of 126 bones. You do not need to know the names of all these bones.
